Whilst we wait for the commercial vehicle market to re-energise fully, obtaining your next van could take longer than you think..!

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, there were 157,150 new LCV registrations (up to 3.5t GVW) since March 2021, indicating the demand is there, however lead times are lengthy and it’s not looking rosy in the used van market either if you are without a van.

Our Group Head of Commercial, Vehicle Steve Moss, explains more: “Coming out of the first lockdown, all previously agreed dealership sales and stock held via our dealer introducers quickly left the forecourts with most dealerships struggling to backfill”

The impacts of the pandemic were visible – New motor manufacturing halted, fleet operators resisted upgrading large fleets, and with the lack of confidence around business operation and cost base, the knock-on effect is less vans coming onto the used market – Add to this the current slowdown in availability of parts (and in particular, microchips for new vans) this could be a bumpy few months, if you’re without a van..!

Following the easing of lock down, with businesses and the self-employed van drivers becoming busier than ever, many have started looking to upgrade their van (something previously put off due to the pandemic) only to discover a higher purchase price with a smaller supply level

Steve goes on to say “If you think your van may not last until the year end, you should start looking now, rather than delay – Ordering a new van today via certain manufacturers will see you not taking delivery until 2022 at the earliest..! – Any used vans available are being snapped up quickly at higher prices – Come the end of the year, you could find yourself waiting significantly longer” .
