Update on MOT’s from 1 August 2020

Earlier this year, the Government gave an automatic six month extension for vehicles that were due to be MOT’d during lockdown. However, any vehicles that are due an MOT from 1 August 2020 will still require one. Outlined below are two scenarios to highlight who would need to get their MOT now, versus one that’s exempt for six months.

Alan’s Audi A3 is due its MOT on 27 July and he’s still using the car to get to work. He’s worried that with the latest Government advice, he’ll need to rush to get his car MOT’d.

Under the Government’s current rules, Alan wouldn’t need to get his MOT sorted until later in the year as the MOT expiry date will automatically be extended by six months if it’s eligible. This will happen around a week before it’s due to expire. As Alan is still driving the car, he’ll need to make sure it’s remains taxed. Alan’s insurance won’t be affected as the exemption is automatically applied.

You can check the MOT status on your vehicle by visiting the Government website (it’s advised to check three days prior to the expiry date).

Jill’s Range Rover Sport is due its MOT on 10 August. She’s due to go on holiday to Cornwall on the 5th, so wants to know if she has to book the MOT quickly.

Jill will need to get her Range Rover booked in for an MOT before the 10th but MOT centres are now open so she shouldn’t have too many problems getting it booked in. She can book this in up to a month (minus one day) before it’s due to run out.

What if I’m shielding?

If you’re self-isolating, it’s advised that you should not take your car for an MOT. Some MOT centres will collect the vehicle from your address and return it once the MOT has been carried out.

If you’re no longer self-isolating, you need to book your MOT as soon as possible (for those that are due after 1 August 2020) and not drive your vehicle until your MOT is booked in.
