Share your Summer Adventures with A-Plan

Schools have broken up, home schooling has finished for the summer and lockdown has continued to ease, as many of us now look to spend more time with friends and family and away from our homes.

Whether you’re planning a day out visiting friends, enjoying your first meal in a pub garden since before lockdown, or perhaps going on family trip to the seaside, we’ve got some great ideas on how to make the most of the summer. Plus, we want to be a part of it – don’t worry, we’re not going to turn up at your house whilst you’re having your family BBQ, but we do want you to share your best moments with us – and you could win yourself a prize (more on that later).

Walking adventures

According to the BBC website, it’s estimated that there are over 140,000 miles of public footpaths in England and Wales and an estimated 9,300 in Scotland, so there’s plenty of opportunity for us to not only get our 10,000 steps in each day, but enjoy the all the beauty Great Britain has to offer.

Whether you’re new to walking or have been walking for years, why not check out GetOutside. Founded by Ordnance Survey, they want to help more people to get outside, more often. They’ve got lots of useful guides, or you can download their app to find a route local to you.

Get out on the water

As a nation, we’re increasingly enjoying more watersports, with a surge in stand-up paddle boarding in particular – British Canoeing estimate that 600,000 paddleboarders regularly get out on the water. Along with canoeing and kayaking, it’s great fun for all the family, with plenty of places to paddle around the UK. Just remember, depending on where you paddle, you may need a licence. Find out more by visiting British Waterways.

Discover Parks and Gardens

The National Trust has re-opened more than 130 of their parks and gardens in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You can search for days outs by visiting their website and selecting the area you want to visit, from Roman Villas, Castles and medieval gardens to beautiful beaches, there’s plenty to see and do.

If history is your thing, it’s also worth checking out English Heritage for which sites are now open – there’s plenty of history and intrigue – from learning about the Battle of Hastings to wandering around the beautiful gardens of one of their properties. They’ve only opened a few sites, so be sure to visit their website for details.

Beach life

We couldn’t not mention a visit to the beach. Although we still need to be sensible and keep our distance from others, a day out at the beach could be just what you need. Whether you choose to get up earlier and head down in the morning, or pick somewhere a little less known, time at the beach is always a firm family favourite. Why not check the beach guide for some of the UK’s top beaches.

The Staycation

We know that for some, venturing further afield may not be possible so why not host your very own garden camp out? Dig out that tent that’s been lurking at the back of the garage for years and set up your pitch for the night. Get the BBQ on (or grab one of those disposable ones from the supermarket), stick on a few sausages and enjoy your technology free evening. The children or grandchildren will love it.

Even if you don’t camp out for the night, getting your loved ones over for a BBQ, after months of not seeing each other, could be the highlight of your summer. If you’re looking for some BBQ cooking inspiration, head over to BBC Good Food for some delicious recipe ideas.
